Queens is the transportation and manufacturing center of New York City. One of the five boroughs of New York, it is the largest in terms of area, covering 127 square miles. It lies adjacent to Manhattan, Brooklyn and the Bronx. The first Dutch settlers arrived in Queens in 1635 and it was incorporated into New York City in 1898. It consists of several residential neighborhoods, among them Flushing, Forest Hills and Kew Gardens. Queens is the location of both LaGuardia International Airport and John F. Kennedy International Airport. The community has attractions that include cultural venues, lots of city parks, restaurants, theaters and Queens College. The American Museum of the Moving Image is located in Queens, and chronicles the art, history, technique and technology of motion pictures, television, video and digital media. Other places of interest include the New York Hall of Science, Queens Botanical Garden, and the Isamu Noguchi Garden Museum. Flushing Meadows Corona Park has bicycle paths, a carousel, fishing, putt-putt golf and an ice rink. Paddleboats and rowboats can be rented at Meadow Lake in the park. Queens is approximately ten minutes to Manhattan’s shopping, restaurants and nightlife.

Queens Weather & Climate

Manhattan and the surrounding area have four seasons of changeable weather. Summers are often hot and muggy and last until September. Temperatures usually soar to near 100 degrees F. for a week to ten days in mid-July to mid-August. Another uncomfortable time to visit New York City is during January and February when temps are often in the 20s and the concrete canyons of the city can turn into wind tunnels. Otherwise, the rest of the year the weather is comfortable, with March usually being the rainiest month. May offers great weather %u2013 just warm enough for walking around but cool enough to remain comfortable. Autumn has more sunshine than spring, although both are clear and bright. New York City is magical at Christmas time and the changing leaves of fall makes it a beautiful time to visit the area.

The closest airports in the area are the La Guardia airport (LGA) located about 3 miles northwest of Queens in New York, New York, the John F Kennedy International airport (JFK) located approximately 7 miles south of Queens in New York, New York, the Teterboro airport (TEB) located roughly 14 miles northwest of Queens in Teterboro, New Jersey, and finally the Newark Liberty International airport (EWR) located around 18 miles west of Queens in Newark, New Jersey.
