Lake-Placid is probably most well known for being the site of the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympics. One of the town's attractions is the Winter Olympic Museum & Hall of Fame, which includes exhibits and video highlights from the games. Lake Placid is located in the northern part of the state near the Whiteface Mountain Ski Area in the Adirondack Mountains. The picturesque village lies along the shores of both Mirror Lake and Lake Placid, creating a tranquil, idyllic scene. As one would expect of a host city of the Winter Olympics, the area boasts world class skiing and other winter sports, such as snowboarding, ice skating, luge & bobsled runs, snowmobiling, snowshoeing and more. The city of Lake Placid says "winter here isn't just a season...it's a celebration." The other seasons of the year are just as active with opportunities for hiking, fishing, canoeing, mountain biking, white water rafting, horseback riding and golf. There is an indoor Olympic Arena for summer ice skating, and boats can be rented on both Lake Placid and Mirror Lake. The region surrounding Lake Placid includes quaint 19th century villages, historic sites and museums, and the village hosts an annual film festival, and an annual winter carnival that is one of the oldest in the country. Shopping in Lake Placid is one of a kind, and dining is everything from five star to casual. Anyone visiting will most likely find they want to return soon because there is so much to do here, it's difficult to see it all in just one trip.

Lake Placid Weather & Climate

The Adirondack Mountains, near Saranac Lake and Lake Placid, enjoys four specific seasons with winters that are crisp, cold and snowy and warm, pleasant summers with low humidity. In spring and autumn, the days are warm and the evenings cool, perfect for viewing the wildflowers of April or the colors of fall. The average summer temperature is 75 F (24 C) and the average low is 50F (10 C); winter's average high is 27 F (-3 C) and the average low is 5 F (-15 C). The annual precipitation is 39 inches, keeping the forests green and the lakes and streams flowing. As with most mountain climates, the weather can change quickly, however, so be prepared. A sunny day can turn stormy very quickly in the higher elevations. Luckily, the Adirondacks do not experience the devastation of tornadoes, earthquakes or hurricanes as do some other areas of the country. There is no specific rainy season; rather there are both wet and dry spells in every season.
