Wilmington lies in the heart of the Adirondack Park Preserve, and is home to the popular Whiteface Mountain ski area. It's part of Essex County in the northeastern part of the state, and is situated between Lake Placid and Keeseville along Highway 86. Whiteface Mountain was the site of the 1980 Winter Olympic Games and was three times voted "top ski resort in the eastern United States" by readers of SKI Magazine. Whiteface Mountains stats include a 3,430-foot vertical drop and 75 trails for beginners, intermediate and expert skiers. The eight passenger gondola on the Mountain is used in summertime to take visitors on a thrilling ride to the summit, where picnic tables and panoramic views of the Au Sable River and the Adirondack High Peaks awaits them. Other attractions in Wilmington are the Whiteface Mountain Veteran's Memorial Highway, which is a five-mile toll road that offers spectacular views of the mountains and a historic toll house, castle and tunnel. High Falls Gorge is another Wilmington attraction, a 700-foot waterfall located at the base of Whiteface Mountain, with self-guided tours along groomed paths and walkways. The population of the village of Wilmington is just over 1,100 residents, but due to its proximity to Whiteface Mountain and Lake Placid, it offers visitors amenities and services you would expect in a much larger city.

Wilmington Weather & Climate

The Adirondack Mountains, near Saranac Lake and Lake Placid, enjoys four specific seasons with winters that are crisp, cold and snowy and warm, pleasant summers with low humidity. In spring and autumn, the days are warm and the evenings cool, perfect for viewing the wildflowers of April or the colors of fall. The average summer temperature is 75 F (24 C) and the average low is 50F (10 C); winter's average high is 27 F (-3 C) and the average low is 5 F (-15 C). The annual precipitation is 39 inches, keeping the forests green and the lakes and streams flowing. As with most mountain climates, the weather can change quickly, however, so be prepared. A sunny day can turn stormy very quickly in the higher elevations. Luckily, the Adirondacks do not experience the devastation of tornadoes, earthquakes or hurricanes as do some other areas of the country. There is no specific rainy season; rather there are both wet and dry spells in every season.
