Monticello
means “little mountain” in Italian, and is an apt name for this small town that sits in the heart of the Catskills, just an hour and a half from New York City. The town of Monticello has long been known as the “Crossroads of the Catskills,” and offers visitors an array of attractions and activities. It’s located in Sullivan County along Highway 42 off Route 17 near the Swinging Bridge Reservoir. Route 17 is soon to become Interstate 86, thus making Monticello a prime location for business, as well as tourist development. Monticello has four seasons of activities. Choose from hiking, fly fishing and boating, golf, horseback riding, swimming and mountain biking in the summertime, to downhill and cross country skiing, snowmobiling, sledding and ice skating in the wintertime. Other non-sports related activities in the Monticello region include antiquing, visiting area farmers markets and flea markets and dining in delightful country restaurants. The Minnewaska State Park, with its waterfalls, cliffs and lakes and streams, is less than a half-hour away from Monticello. Other nearby attractions include the Ellenville Ice Caves, Shawangunk Ridge Trail and the Mohonk Preserve.

The Hudson Valley Region, which generally refers to the canyon area of the Hudson River and surrounding communities in New York State, has a four-season climate. The first significant snowfall usually occurs in December, but there are variations. Some years there is no snow or ice and the temperatures and river stays quite mild %u2013 high 40s to low 50s. March is the month to look for the first signs of spring. Summers in the Hudson Valley are hazy, warm and humid. September can be a mixed bag of clear, cool Canadian air or humid, warm air with intense downpours. October is one of the best months in the region for hiking and other outdoor sports. The weather is cooler and less humid then, with crisp, clear views of the High Peaks of the Adirondacks, the Catskills and the Hudson Highlands.
