Sharon-Springs is a historic village in Schoharie County in Central New York. The town is known for its unique architecture that dates back to when the village was an internationally famous health spa. Today, the population of Sharon Springs is approximately 550 full time residents. The village of Sharon Springs lies within the northwest part of the Town of Sharon but it incorporated as a village in 1871, absorbing the neighborhood of Rockville during the process. Sharon Springs became a highly fashionable and popular spa during the 19th century thanks to the abundance of sulpher, magnesium and chalybeate mineral springs at the site of the town. The most famous of the springs - both in the 1800s and today - is called Gardner Spring. The village lost some of its popularity during Prohibition and also with the growing attractions of horse racing in nearby Saratoga Springs. However, there has been a growing restoration and rebirth of Sharon Springs within the past 15 years. There is now a thriving commercial district and a growing tourist trade in the whole region. In addition, there are approximately 180 historical buildings in the village, including bathhouses, hotels and homes that date to the 19th century and early 20th century that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A historic walking tour is available along the Main Street of town. Other activities in Sharon Springs include summer street concerts, a childrens theater, craft fairs, hiking and sightseeing along the beautiful highways and back country roads surrounding the village.
