Shirley is a hamlet on Long Island in Suffolk County situated in the south part of the town of Brookhaven. As of the 2000 census, Shirley had a population of 25,395. As part of Brookhaven, the hamlet of Shirley has access to the Long Island Sound and the Atlantic Ocean. The towns of Riverhead and Southampton lie to the east and Smithtown and Islip to the west. Shirley is just 60 miles from Manhattan and offers lots of outdoor recreational fun and activities for the whole family. Brookhaven has several marinas and docks for boating and fishing, beaches for swimming, and dozens of parks and playgrounds for golf, tennis, biking, children's play areas, picnicking, ballgames and more. Other nearby attractions include the Town of Brookhaven Ecology Site, Park and Animal Preserve, which has amenities such as a triple pool complex, zoo and ecology center, children's petting zoo and ecology tours. Fire Island National Seashore Park runs along the southern border of Brookhaven and along the North Shore are many Long Island Sound beaches. Other historical villages in the area include Stony Brook, Jefferson, Patchogue and Bellport, each offering their own unique attractions and charm.

Shirley Weather & Climate

Long Island enjoys a four-season, moderate climate, given its relatively northern latitude-which makes it a pleasant place to visit year-round. It is the largest island adjoining the continental United States, extending approximately 118 miles east-northeast from the mouth of the Hudson River, adjacent to Manhattan Island. Winters tend to be unpredictable and summers can be warm and muggy, but offshore breezes help moderate temperatures. Spring and fall are the best times to visit, when temperatures are mild. March tends to be rainy, but temperatures stay above freezing. April's warming temperatures makes it more comfortable and May is generally a gorgeous month on Long Island, weather wise. September to November is pleasant and mild, and the changing leaves make it a beautiful time to visit.
