South-Salem is a hamlet of the town of Lewisboro in Westchester County in the Hudson River Valley Region. The town of "Salem" was formed in 1747 with the named changing to "South Salem" in 1806. A financier named John Lewis requested that the town be given his name after he established a fund for the town. Other hamlets in the area include Cross River, Goldens Bridge, Vista and Waccabuc. The town of Lewisboro is known for its' elaborate Colonial mansions and beautiful gardens. The Hudson Valley region is also home to other well-known historic towns such as Sleepy Hollow, Tarrytown and Irvington. A few of the many attractions in the area include the Hudson River Museum, which is located in a beautiful 23-acre park that houses six modern galleries, a restored 1876 Victorian mansion and the Andrus Planetarium. The Hudson River Maritime Museum and the Shaker Museum and Library are also just a short drive from South Salem. The Cross River Reservoir, Byram Lake Reservoir and New Croton Reservoir are all located in nearby Katonah. This is just a sampling of the places to see while visiting South Salem - there are also Hudson River cruises available and the area is filled with antique shops and romantic bed and breakfast inns. Recreational activities available near South Salem include hiking, biking, boating, fishing, horseback riding, birding, picnicking and skiing.

South Salem Weather & Climate

The Hudson Valley ,which generally refers to the canyon area of the Hudson River and surrounding communities in New York State, has a four-season climate. The first significant snowfall usually occurs in December, but there are variations. Some years there is no snow or ice and the temperatures and river stays quite mild - high 40s to low 50s. March is the month to look for the first signs of spring. Summers in the Hudson Valley are hazy, warm and humid. September can be a mixed bag of clear, cool Canadian air or humid, warm air with intense downpours. October is one of the best months in the region for hiking and other outdoor sports. The weather is cooler and less humid then, with crisp, clear views of the High Peaks of the Adirondacks, the Catskills and the Hudson Highlands.
