Pawling is a town of approximately 7,500 located in Dutchess County in the Hudson Valley. The town also contains a village called Pawling, which has a population of about 2,200 residents. The village of Pawling is centrally located in the town of Pawling at the junctions of Routes 22 and 55. This historic community has a section of the town named “the Oblong,” which was settled by the Quakers around 1720. The Quaker Meetinghouse is still standing today and is open to the public. George Washington also had his headquarters in the town of Pawling for about two months. The Pawling Cemetery, located on the west side of Route 22, is the resting place for New York Governor and Presidential candidate, Thomas E. Dewey (1902-1971.) Several other persons of notoriety are buried there, including U.S. Navy Rear Admiral John Lorimer Worden (1818-1897,) commander of the ironclad USS Monitor during the Civil War, actress Silvana Mangano (1930-1989,) Civil War Congressional Medal of Honor recipient, John J. Toffey (1844-1911,) and U.S. Congressman Ralph Waldo Gwinn (1884-1962.) The oldest public golf course in the country, the Dutcher Golf Course, is located in Pawling and is still in use today. The town of Pawling is in the heart of the beautiful Hudson River Valley region, near the Appalachian Trail and the Pawling Nature Preserve. Hiking, biking, swimming, fishing, boating, cross-country skiing and picnicking are just a few of the activities available near Pawling.

The Hudson Valley Region which generally refers to the canyon area of the Hudson River and surrounding communities in New York State, has a four-season climate. The first significant snowfall usually occurs in December, but there are variations. Some years there is no snow or ice and the temperatures and river stays quite mild %u2013 high 40s to low 50s. March is the month to look for the first signs of spring. Summers in the Hudson Valley are hazy, warm and humid. September can be a mixed bag of clear, cool Canadian air or humid, warm air with intense downpours. October is one of the best months in the region for hiking and other outdoor sports. The weather is cooler and less humid then, with crisp, clear views of the High Peaks of the Adirondacks, the Catskills and the Hudson Highlands.
