Chatham is an old New England style village nestled in the foothills of the Berkshire Mountains, located approximately halfway between Albany and Pittsfield, Massachusetts. This small town was first known as “Groat’s Corners,” and received its present name in 1869. History buffs love the town, whose oldest building is an inn built in 1811 that is still in business today as a tavern. Many of the community’s original wooden structures, located on the east side of town, were destroyed in a disastrous 1869 fire. From the ashes, there arose a line of brick buildings that are unique today in their uniform architecture. The countryside surrounding Chatham is lovely – rolling hills and the towering Catskills, pristine lakes and streams and fresh country air. The area has become popular for its outdoor recreation and with summer residents who have built homes on the small lakes nearby. Summer weekends find many tourists walking the main street of Chatham, looking through the antique stores and quaint shops. The town is close to Lake Taconic State Park, the Bash Bish Falls and Copake Lake. Chatham is home to the Mac-Hayden Theater, which sits on a hill overlooking the village, and the Shaker Museum & Theater is located in nearby Old Chatham. The town is also well known for its railroading history, and its Union Station is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Chatham Weather & Climate

The Catskills climate has variations depending on the elevation. There is a totally different winter in the mountains and the higher plateaus over 1,000 feet. There, the grip of winter is strong and steady, and above freezing temperatures are less common. Average January temperatures are three to four degrees colder at elevations from one to two thousand feet and over seven degrees colder at elevations above two thousand feet. Snowfall is fairly uniform during the month of January in the Catskills. The third week of July is generally the hottest time of the year in the Catskills, and rainfall during the warm months is usually confined to a few days rather than spread throughout the month. September has warm days, cool nights and fog at dawn over the Hudson valley. By October the hills are a kaleidoscope of color, and the first hard freeze is usually at the end of October.
