West Coxsackie is a hamlet that is located northwest of the small town of Coxsackie on Route 81 in Greene County. The town is situated along the Hudson River. The settlement of Coxsackie dates to the 17th century as part of the development of New Netherlands. The actual town of Coxsackie was founded in 1788, but part of the town was lost when the town of Durham was founded in 1790. Even more of Coxsackie was lost with the formation of other newer towns, including Cairo, Greenville, New Baltimore and Athens. In 1663, one of the first settlers, Pieter Bronck, built a home in West Coxsackie that is now open as a museum. Other attractions include a beautiful park on the edge of the Hudson River that offers picnicking, a boat launch, a playground, and a new Gazebo that is the site of many summer concerts. Other activities in the area include fishing, jet skiing, water skiing, boating and sailing and golf. Hiking trails are available at the Four Mile Point Preserve and two major ski resorts are located in Greene County. The historic downtown area of Coxsackie was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980, and the old river freighter, Storm King, still rests where she sank at her dock in 1936. West Coxsackie is a four-season destination with rolling green hills, open meadows, beautiful lakes and a historic river.

The Catskills climate has variations depending on the elevation. There is a totally different winter in the mountains and the higher plateaus over 1,000 feet. There, the grip of winter is strong and steady, and above freezing temperatures are less common. Average January temperatures are three to four degrees colder at elevations from one to two thousand feet and over seven degrees colder at elevations above two thousand feet. Snowfall is fairly uniform during the month of January in the Catskills. The third week of July is generally the hottest time of the year in the Catskills, and rainfall during the warm months is usually confined to a few days rather than spread throughout the month. September has warm days, cool nights and fog at dawn over the Hudson valley. By October the hills are a kaleidoscope of color, and the first hard freeze is usually at the end of October.
