Athens is a small town located in Greene County in the Catskills Mountains of southern New York. It is easily located along Highway 385, just off Interstate 87, between the towns of Coxsackie and Catskill, near the Hudson River. The village of Athens is within a four-season vacation area with spectacular scenery – everything from rolling green hills, open meadows, mountains, cascading waterfalls and sparkling lakes and streams. It’s also an area rich in history and tradition with many historic sights, arts and crafts fairs, music and ethnic dance celebrations. There are two major ski resorts located in Greene County near Athens, and ten challenging golf courses. Fishing is prime and the area is well known for its small and large mouth bass and native trout. There are also hiking trails, mountain biking, horseback riding, camping and canoeing available near Athens. Greene County offers a wide variety of lodging – everything from bed & breakfasts and country inns to hotels, motels and campgrounds. Points of interest include the Athens Lighthouse, the Athens Museum, which contains a large collection of shipbuilding memorabilia and local history, and “Shakespeare on the River,” a Shakespeare festival held in an open-air theater of the Hudson River.

Athens Weather & Climate

The Catskills climate has variations depending on the elevation. There is a totally different winter in the mountains and the higher plateaus over 1,000 feet. There, the grip of winter is strong and steady, and above freezing temperatures are less common. Average January temperatures are three to four degrees colder at elevations from one to two thousand feet and over seven degrees colder at elevations above two thousand feet. Snowfall is fairly uniform during the month of January in the Catskills. The third week of July is generally the hottest time of the year in the Catskills, and rainfall during the warm months is usually confined to a few days rather than spread throughout the month. September has warm days, cool nights and fog at dawn over the Hudson valley. By October the hills are a kaleidoscope of color, and the first hard freeze is usually at the end of October.

The closest airports in the area are the Albany International airport (ALB) located about 33 miles north of Athens in Albany, New York, the Schenectady County airport (SCH) located approximately 40 miles north of Athens in Schenectady, New York, the Stewart International airport (SWF) located roughly 54 miles southwest of Athens in Newburgh, New York, the Barnes Municipal airport (BAF) located around 56 miles east of Athens in Westfield, Massachusetts, and finally the Bradley International airport (BDL) located about 62 miles southeast of Athens in Windsor Locks, Connecticut.
