Palenville is located in Greene County at the foot of Kaaterskill Clove, which is situated against the base of the Catskill Mountains. With a population of around 1,200 residents, the village is situated in the southwest part of the town of Catskill. Kaaterskill Creek runs through Palenville and is spanned by a (locally) famous swinging bridge. The creek also provides some great swimming holes in the summertime. The sleepy little hamlet of Palenville is historically rich and boasts the Catskill Mountain Home, which is the home of the legendary Rip Van Winkle. Palenville is also considered the “First Art Colony in America” and was an important center for the Hudson River School of Art in the 19th century. Thomas Cole, Frederic Church and other notable artists worked in Palenville during the height of the movement. Lots of beautiful waterfalls can be found in the area, many of which were depicted in the works of some of the most famous 19th century American artists. Palenville was, in fact, often referred to as “Village of Falling Waters.” Recreational activities in the area include hiking, swimming, horseback riding, bicycling, golf and picnicking. Nearby attractions include the Palenville Interarts Colony, the Hunter Mountain, Windham and Cortina ski areas, North Lake State Park, the Catskill Game Farm, the quaint towns of Woodstock and East Durham and dozens and dozens of antique shops.

Palenville Weather & Climate

The Catskills climate has variations depending on the elevation. There is a totally different winter in the mountains and the higher plateaus over 1,000 feet. There, the grip of winter is strong and steady, and above freezing temperatures are less common. Average January temperatures are three to four degrees colder at elevations from one to two thousand feet and over seven degrees colder at elevations above two thousand feet. Snowfall is fairly uniform during the month of January in the Catskills. The third week of July is generally the hottest time of the year in the Catskills, and rainfall during the warm months is usually confined to a few days rather than spread throughout the month. September has warm days, cool nights and fog at dawn over the Hudson valley. By October the hills are a kaleidoscope of color, and the first hard freeze is usually at the end of October.
