Woodstock is known internationally as an arts and crafts colony, which began in the nineteenth century. In 1902, the famed Byrdcliffe Arts and Crafts Colony was established, and shortly thereafter, the Arts Student League of New York City opened a summer school here. Today, the town of Woodstock is home to many art galleries and studios noted for their exhibits of some of the finest arts and crafts. In 1969, Woodstock became infamous for the rock concert, which interestingly enough, was actually held in the nearby town of Bethel, fifty miles to the south. This matter aside, the village of Woodstock has always been synonymous with music, art, creativity, nature and hedonism. It’s rural setting among the beautiful forested mountains makes it one of the most picturesque towns in the state. It has a small, but packed, business district, with some of the region’s most unique shops selling everything from candles to antiques. There are plentiful accommodations in town, as well as great restaurants and cafes. The Woodstock School of Art, which is a National Historic Landmark, is located here and the town holds an annual Woodstock Film Festival, and an annual Holiday Open House, when visitors can stroll through the charming art colony while they enjoy wine, cheese and other refreshments. For outdoor recreation, everything from golf, fishing and hiking to downhill and cross-country skiing can be found in the Woodstock area.

The Catskills region has cold, snowy winters and warm summers, but without the stifling, oppressive heat and humidity of some coastal areas. Normally, the hottest week of the year in the Catskills is the third week of July. September offers mild days and cool nights and October is a kaleidoscope of color. %u201CJack Frost%u201D will likely make his first appearance in October, and the first hard freeze is usually at the end of that month. November is unpredictable and with December comes colder temperatures and more moisture %u2013 either in the form of rain or snow. The full force of the winter season arrives in January and stays around until March in the Catskills. Average January temperatures are a good three to four degrees colder at elevations from one to two thousand feet and over seven degrees colder at over two thousand feet.
