Shokan is a small village located on the Ashokan Reservoir within the town of Olive, about twenty minutes from both Woodstock and Belleayre Mountain. It is north of the reservoir on Route 28, west of the hamlet of Ashokan. Recreation in the area includes fishing and boating, swimming, hiking, biking, golf, tennis, canoeing and tubing. Belleayre Mountain is the site of a four-season resort park, famous for its’ summertime trout fishing and wintertime skiing, tubing and sledding. The forested mountains of this region makes it one of the most picturesque in the state, where antiquing and visiting flea markets and farmer’s markets are a favorite pastime of many visitors. The nearby town of Woodstock is internationally known as an arts and crafts colony, which began in the 19th century. The town is home to many art galleries and studios, cafes and restaurants, and unique shops that sell everything from one-of-a-kind gifts to antiques. In 1969, the town of Woodstock became infamous for the rock concert of the same name, although, interestingly enough, it was actually held in the nearby town of Bethel. The Woodstock School of Art, which is a National Historic Landmark, holds an annual Film Festival and a Holiday Open House each year.

Shokan Weather & Climate

The Catskills region has cold, snowy winters and warm summers, but without the stifling, oppressive heat and humidity of some coastal areas. Normally, the hottest week of the year in the Catskills is the third week of July. September offers mild days and cool nights and October is a kaleidoscope of color. %u201CJack Frost%u201D will likely make his first appearance in October, and the first hard freeze is usually at the end of that month. November is unpredictable and with December comes colder temperatures and more moisture %u2013 either in the form of rain or snow. The full force of the winter season arrives in January and stays around until March in the Catskills. Average January temperatures are a good three to four degrees colder at elevations from one to two thousand feet and over seven degrees colder at over two thousand feet.
