Austerlitz is a small town of about 1,500, located in the foothills of the Berkshire Mountains, about a two and a half-hour drive from New York City and Boston. Once part of the state of Massachusetts, lovely Austerlitz was named by Martin Van Buren, and a well known resident of the town was poet Edna St. Vincent Millay. There is much to see and do in this charming historic area, so you’ll want to take your time when you visit Austerlitz. It’s less than 20 minutes to the popular Tanglewood music festivals and concerts, and the area if filled with fine restaurants, theaters, galleries, unique gift stores and antique shops. There are historic spots to explore like the Mount Lebanon Shaker Village and the Martin Van Buren National Historic Site, and charming village of over a hundred years ago with ice cream parlors and general stores. In addition, four major ski resorts are located near Austerlitz and other recreational activities in the area include swimming, boating, golf, tennis, hiking and biking and picnicking. Any time of year is beautiful, of course, but fall is a gorgeous time to visit the Berkshires when the rolling hillsides turn various shades of red and gold. It’s also a good time to sample the area’s harvest of apples, sweet corn, peaches and tomatoes when you visit one of the many farmstands or country markets near the town of Austerlitz.

Austerlitz Weather & Climate

Western New York, including The Berkshires, has a moderate four-season climate. The first significant snowfall usually occurs in December, but it varies from year to year. Some years there is no snow or ice until after the first of the new year, and the temperatures near The Hudson River stay quite mild. March is the month to look for the first signs of spring, although cool temps can linger throughout the month. Summers are hazy, warm and humid. September can be mixed with either clear, cool Canadian air or humid, warm air with intense downpours. October is possibly the most beautiful month in the Berkshires with warm, sunny days and cool, crisp nights. Perfect weather for enjoying the foliage. Typically, colors peak the first three weeks of October.
