Copake Lake is a hamlet with a population of approximately 762 that is located in southeastern Columbia County near the Taconic State Parkway and the Massachusetts border. It is part of the town of Copake, which includes the hamlets of Copake Falls, West Copake, Craryville and Copake Lake. Taconic State Park near Copake Lake consists of more than 5,000 acres that runs along the eleven miles that separates New York from Massachusetts and Connecticut. The park features swimming, trout fishing, hiking, picnicking and camping. A historic foundry, built in 1845, is also located inside the park, and is a museum that contains all the original implements of the time. Just across the border in Egremont, Massachusetts is the spectacular Bash Bish Falls State Park. Other local attractions near the village of Copake Lake include Lake Taghkanic, which has camping, two beaches, playgrounds, boat rentals, picnic areas and hiking trails. Winter activities at Taconic State Park and Lake Taghkanic include ice fishing, cross country skiing, snowmobiling and ice-skating. Historic sites near Copake include Martin Van Buren’s Lindenwald and the Clermont State Historic Site. The town of Copake also hosts an annual Antique & Bicycle Auction and an annual New Year’s Day Americana Auction that features 18th and 19th century furniture, Folk Art, textiles and period accessories.

Copake Lake Weather & Climate

The Catskills climate has variations depending on the elevation. There is a totally different winter in the mountains and the higher plateaus over 1,000 feet. There, the grip of winter is strong and steady, and above freezing temperatures are less common. Average January temperatures are three to four degrees colder at elevations from one to two thousand feet and over seven degrees colder at elevations above two thousand feet. Snowfall is fairly uniform during the month of January in the Catskills. The third week of July is generally the hottest time of the year in the Catskills, and rainfall during the warm months is usually confined to a few days rather than spread throughout the month. September has warm days, cool nights and fog at dawn over the Hudson valley. By October the hills are a kaleidoscope of color, and the first hard freeze is usually at the end of October.
