Durham
is a small town located in the southeastern portion of the state near the Catskill State Park. It lies at the foot of Mt. Pisgah and is approximately 30 miles southwest of Albany and two hours from New York City. This is a historic, rural area scattered with many small towns and villages, or "hamlets" with names such as Medusa, Preston Hollow, Cooksburg, Freehold and Lambs Corner. The town of Durham was formed in the year 1790 and lies in one of the richest agricultural regions of the state. It's also an area with an abundance of historic spots, antique stores, farmer's markets and festivals, hiking, fishing and boating. The town of Durham contains the hamlets of Oak Hill, Cornwallville, South Durham and East Durham. East Durham is known as the "Emerald Isle of the Catsills," and is home to an annual Catskills Irish Arts Week and the Irish Cultural and Sports Center. Other nearby attractions include the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, Tanglewood Ranch in Cornwallville and the East Durham Irish Heritage Museum. East Durham also holds an annual Irish Festival, which features bagpipers, food, Irish music and crafts. Durham is just a short drive to Lake Otsego, also called Glimmerglass Lake, which offers more outdoor recreational opportunities.

West Central New York has a distinct four-season climate with cold, snowy winters and warm summers with moderate humidity. Precipitation in the region ranges from 36 inches to more than 44 inches of rain and snowmelt, with the heaviest received in the northeast portion of the region. Autumn is crisp, cool and sunny, perfect weather for sightseeing and fall color tours along the country roads. Generally, colors peak the first three weeks of October. The first frost of the season is generally in late September or early October. Spring arrives in March, although temperatures usually remain cool throughout the month. Central New York does not experience devastating storms such as tornadoes or hurricanes, as do other parts of the country.
