Ocean Beach is generally considered the largest community on Fire Island, which is a barrier island located on the southern end of Long Island. During the daytime hours, Ocean Beach is frequently packed with families with children, playing at the beach, eating at the local restaurants and enjoying ice cream. Come nightfall, Ocean Beach attracts a different crowd of people who converge in the local bars and restaurants to party. The town of Ocean Beach has paved walkways for bicycles and pedestrians along the beach, and has the most shops and restaurants of the communities on Fire Island. It is also home to a campground located between the dunes and the bay with 28 sandy campsites and a nature trail. The Fire Island National Seashore is accessible by car near its eastern end at Smith Point County Park on the island. One of the other top attractions on Fire Island near Ocean Beach is the Sunken Forest, which is a very unique area that is one of the last remaining maritime forests on the eastern seaboard. The 40-acre forest earned its name because it appears lower than the surrounding water, although it is not actually below sea level - the high surrounding sand dunes that protect this environment create the illusion of being lower than sea level. Other attractions near Ocean Beach include Sailors Haven, which offers a marina, beach and picnic areas, and Robert Moses State Park, located on the west end of the island, with a fishing pier, boat anchorages and a putt-putt golf course.

Ocean Beach Weather & Climate

Long Island enjoys a four-season, moderate climate, given its relatively northern latitude-which makes it a pleasant place to visit year-round. It is the largest island adjoining the continental United States, extending approximately 118 miles east-northeast from the mouth of the Hudson River, adjacent to Manhattan Island. Winters tend to be unpredictable and summers can be warm and muggy, but offshore breezes help moderate temperatures. Spring and fall are the best times to visit, when temperatures are mild. March tends to be rainy, but temperatures stay above freezing. April%u2019s warming temperatures makes it more comfortable and May is generally a gorgeous month on Long Island, weather wise. September to November is pleasant and mild, and the changing leaves make it a beautiful time to visit.
