Burdett is a small village located in Schuyler County on the East Side of Seneca Lake in the scenic Finger Lakes National Forest of central New York. The eleven, deep-blue finger-shaped lakes were carved by ancient glaciers and are surrounded by rolling hills, waterfalls and rocky gorges. The scenery in the area is quite spectacular. Small towns and villages dot the countryside, and the hills are interspersed with vineyards. Burdett is home to the Skyland Farm Art Gallery & Café, where local artisans display their works among wild roses, a labyrinth, and garden ornaments and farm animals. A “castle-like” barn features unique gifts, and visitors can even create their own pot in the pottery studio. The Finger Lakes Region was named one of the “100 Great Escapes for 2002” by Travel and Leisure Magazine – it ranked 8th, citing the wineries, canoeing and swimming, and antiquing in the region. Money Magazine selected the Finger Lakes as among the ten most perfect places in North America to vacation. Most visitors agree. The Burdett area contains over 1,000 waterfalls, 25 state parks, a national wildlife refuge, many museums, art galleries, antique shops, and some really great restaurants. Each season in Burdett is beautiful – including winter, when there’s cross-country skiing, ice fishing, snowmobiling and many winter festivals in the neighboring towns and villages.

The Finger Lakes Region is bounded by Lake Ontario to the north and the state of Pennsylvania to the south. Precipitation in the region ranges from less than 36 inches to approximately 40 inches of rain and snowmelt. The lakes act as a moderator of the air temperature. The greater the volume of water, the more time it will take for the air to heat up in the summertime, and in winter, the heat the lakes have retained all summer is slowly released, moderating temps along the shoreline. Communities along the lakeshores will be warmer in winter and cooler in the summer compared to areas further away from the shore. This accounts for the successful vineyards in the Finger Lakes region. As the lake gives out heat in the late fall and early winter, the vineyards have an extended growing season. In addition, the weather in spring heats up more slowly than other areas of the state.
