Keuka Lake is a historic village, founded in 1833 near Keuka Lake, which is the central lake of the picturesque Finger Lakes Region of west-central New York. This small town has a population of approximately 5500 and is the county seat of Yates County. Penn Yan is a charming town filled with architecture from a previous era, and surrounded by vineyards, lush woodlands and many Amish and Mennonite farms. There are eleven lakes in all in the Finger Lakes Region and Penn Yan is situated on the western side of Seneca Lake and at the northernmost tip of Keuka Lake. This is one of the most beautiful regions of the state, and in 2002, Money Magazine selected the Finger Lakes as one of “the 10 perfect places in North America to vacation.” The article highlights “1,063 waterfalls, 25 state parks, a national wildlife refuge, museums, galleries, and great places to eat.” In addition, Travel and Leisure Magazine ranked the Finger Lakes 8th in its’ 2002 “100 Great Escapes.” Penn Yan is home to the Windmill Farm & Craft Market, which is the largest farmer’s market in the state of New York. Other attractions in town include a downtown art gallery that features local artists, an array of unique gift shops and craft shops and The Birkett Mills, one of the largest producers of buckwheat products, built in 1797. In addition, the Keuka Lake Wine Trail is a unique way to experience the 8 wineries that surround the lake.

Keuka Lake Weather & Climate

The Finger Lakes Region is bounded by Lake Ontario to the north and the state of Pennsylvania to the south. Precipitation in the region ranges from less than 36 inches to approximately 40 inches of rain and snowmelt. The lakes act as a moderator of the air temperature. The greater the volume of water, the more time it will take for the air to heat up in the summertime, and in winter, the heat the lakes have retained all summer is slowly released, moderating temps along the shoreline. Communities along the lakeshores will be warmer in winter and cooler in the summer compared to areas further away from the shore. This accounts for the successful vineyards in the Finger Lakes region. As the lake gives out heat in the late fall and early winter, the vineyards have an extended growing season. In addition, the weather in spring heats up more slowly than other areas of the state.
