Lakemont is a small town located on the southwest shore of Seneca Lake, which is one of the largest of the eleven Finger Lakes located in the center of the state. Seneca Lake is the deepest of the lakes, and is known as Ontario County’s waterway connection to the world (due to its accessibility to the Erie Canal and St. Lawrence Seaway.) Outdoor activities abound in the Finger Lakes Region, including swimming, fishing, boating, canoeing, snorkeling, water skiing, kayaking and white-water rafting. Non-lake activities are plentiful, as well, such as hiking, rock climbing, biking, horseback riding, hang-gliding, downhill or cross-country skiing and snowboarding. Several 18-hole golf courses are located around Seneca Lake and the Finger Lakes region is considered the “Wine Country of New York,” with Lakemont being in the heart of Seneca Wine Trail. The Finger Lakes Region was ranked 8th in Travel and Leisure Magazine’s “100 Great Escapes for 2002,” with the magazine citing the wineries, canoeing and swimming and antiquing in the region as some of the top draws for visitors. Of historical interest, the nearby village of Seneca Falls is known as the “birthplace of women’s rights,” and home to the Women’s Rights National Historical Park, which features a 30 minute orientation film Dreams of Equality,” a museum and interactive exhibits with visual displays.

Lakemont Weather & Climate

The Finger Lakes Region is bounded by Lake Ontario to the north and the state of Pennsylvania to the south. Precipitation in the region ranges from less than 36 inches to approximately 40 inches of rain and snowmelt. The lakes act as a moderator of the air temperature. The greater the volume of water, the more time it will take for the air to heat up in the summertime, and in winter, the heat the lakes have retained all summer is slowly released, moderating temps along the shoreline. Communities along the lakeshores will be warmer in winter and cooler in the summer compared to areas further away from the shore. This accounts for the successful vineyards in the Finger Lakes region. As the lake gives out heat in the late fall and early winter, the vineyards have an extended growing season. In addition, the weather in spring heats up more slowly than other areas of the state.
