Hammondsport
is located in the center of the state's grape and wine industry and is known as the home of aviation pioneer Glenn H. Curtiss. The town is located in the Finger Lakes Region of the state on the south end of Keuka Lake approximately 26 miles northwest of the town of Corning. The town has many attractions and special events, including an annual classic boat show in the summertime, an annual crafts show and sale, and an annual Rockwellian Christmas in the Park, which is a festival with a Norman Rockwell theme. The Glenn H. Curtiss museum in Hammondsport exhibits early aircraft, motorcycles and engines, as well as a large collection of china dolls and displays on winemaking. Other attractions include a 500-passenger dinner boat with 3 levels that features dining and sightseeing cruises of Keuka Lake, the Wine and Grape Museum of Greyton H. Taylor and the Keuka Lake Wine Trail. The Finger Lakes Region of New York is one of the most beautiful areas of the state, and in 2002 was selected as one of the "10 perfect places in North America to vacation" by Money Magazine. The town of Hammondsport has many antique shops, art galleries, specialty shops and restaurants. Vineyards and wineries dot the countryside, and many are open to the public for wine tasting and tours.

The Finger Lakes Region is bounded by Lake Ontario to the north and the state of Pennsylvania to the south. Precipitation in the region ranges from less than 36 inches to approximately 40 inches of rain and snowmelt. The lakes act as a moderator of the air temperature. The greater the volume of water, the more time it will take for the air to heat up in the summertime, and in winter, the heat the lakes have retained all summer is slowly released, moderating temps along the shoreline. Communities along the lakeshores will be warmer in winter and cooler in the summer compared to areas further away from the shore. This accounts for the successful vineyards in the Finger Lakes region. As the lake gives out heat in the late fall and early winter, the vineyards have an extended growing season. In addition, the weather in spring heats up more slowly than other areas of the state.
