Cayuga Lake is the longest and widest of the eleven Finger Lakes located in central New York. Located in the heart of the Finger Lakes Region or “Lake Country,” Cayuga Lake offers visitors a number of activities, attractions and sightseeing opportunities. It’s conveniently located near all major state highways and is approximately one hour from Syracuse and three hours from Buffalo and Albany. As part of Cayuga County, this is one of the most relaxing areas of the state, where the blue waters of the lake are surrounded by lush vineyards and rolling hillsides, forests of maple, oak and hemlock, waterfalls and charming lakeside towns and villages. Cayuga Lake State Park has a beautiful beach and lakeside sun lawns, then slopes gently uphill to campsites and cabins. One of the highlights of the park is its expansive view of Cayuga Lake. The state park has a boat launch, playground, playing field and recreation building, and is well known for is excellent fishing. Other outdoor recreation in the area includes hiking, golf, biking, swimming, canoeing – just about any kind of outdoor activity you can think of and more. If you aren’t sports minded – there’s plenty of sightseeing opportunities at Cayuga Lake, as well, such as the famous Cayuga Wine Trail tours, Erie Canal sights, antiquing, art galleries and festivals and nearby Ithaca Falls.

Cayuga Lake Weather & Climate

The Finger Lakes Region has four seasons that are greatly moderated by the eleven lakes of the area. This is because the greater the volume of water, the more time it will take for the air to heat up in the summertime, and in winter, the heat that the lakes have retained all summer is slowly released, moderating temps along the shoreline. Thus, communities along the lakeshores will be warmer in winter and cooler in the summer compared to areas further away from the shore. This phenomenon also accounts for the successful vineyards in the Finger Lakes region. This region receives some of the heaviest snowfalls in the nation. Total precipitation ranges from less than 36 inches to approximately 40 inches of rain and snowmelt.
