Cross Lake is a large inland lake located in Central New York in the Finger Lakes region. It is approximately 30 miles west/northwest of Syracuse and near the small village of Cato. Cross Lake is about four and a half miles long and one mile wide. Swimming, boating, sailing and fishing are available on the lake and other activities in the area include hiking, biking, picnicking and golf. The beautiful Finger Lakes Region of New York contains eleven (major) lakes with over 650 miles of shoreline and many other smaller lakes in the area, as well. It is one of the most scenic regions of the state and is also considered New York’s “wine country.” Attractions include Filmore Glen State Park, Taughannick Falls, Buttermilk Falls, wine tours, the Women’s Rights Museum in Seneca Lake and the Harriet Tubman Home in Auburn. The town of Skaneateles is less than 15 miles from Cross Lake and offers a historic downtown with boutiques, restaurants and art galleries. Skaneateles also hosts live concerts at the Gazebo at Clift Park every Friday and is host to an annual Boat Show in July.

The Finger Lakes Region has four seasons that are greatly moderated by the eleven lakes of the area. This is because the greater the volume of water, the more time it will take for the air to heat up in the summertime, and in winter, the heat that the lakes have retained all summer is slowly released, moderating temps along the shoreline. Thus, communities along the lakeshores will be warmer in winter and cooler in the summer compared to areas further away from the shore. This phenomenon also accounts for the successful vineyards in the Finger Lakes region. This region receives some of the heaviest snowfalls in the nation. Total precipitation ranges from less than 36 inches to approximately 40 inches of rain and snowmelt.
