Skaneateles
is a thriving community that sits on Skaneateles Lake, which is the easternmost of the Finger Lakes that are located in west central New York. The unusual name is an Iroquois word meaning “long lake,” which of course aptly describes Skaneateles Lake, which is 16 miles long and is ranked as one of the cleanest lakes in the country. The town of Skaneateles has a very well preserved historic downtown area with boutiques and art galleries housed in buildings dating back to the year 1796. Fine restaurants and quaint taverns also line the streets, and sidewalks are decorated with flowers and park benches where you can sit and people watch. Other attractions in Skaneateles include parks with playgrounds, a scenic pier for fishing and strolling, live music at the Gazebo in Clift Park every Friday and polo games every Sunday during July and August. Skaneateles is also host to an annual Boat Show in July, presented by the Finger Lakes Chapter of the Antique and Classic Boat Society. For a whole month, beginning the day after Thanksgiving, the town puts on a Dickens Christmas in the Village, with caroling, horse drawn carriages, visits with Santa and Scrooge and other events. Recreation in the area includes swimming, boating, bicycling, hot air balloon rides, picnicking and lake cruises.

The Finger Lakes Region has four seasons that are greatly moderated by the eleven lakes of the area. This is because the greater the volume of water, the more time it will take for the air to heat up in the summertime, and in winter, the heat that the lakes have retained all summer is slowly released, moderating temps along the shoreline. Thus, communities along the lakeshores will be warmer in winter and cooler in the summer compared to areas further away from the shore. This phenomenon also accounts for the successful vineyards in the Finger Lakes region. This region receives some of the heaviest snowfalls in the nation. Total precipitation ranges from less than 36 inches to approximately 40 inches of rain and snowmelt.
