Homer is a picturesque village in the Finger Lakes Region that was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. It has a small town “Americana” charm with broad tree-lined streets and a rich collection of 18th and 19th century homes and buildings. The Victorian business district and village green with its pretty gazebo serve as the “hub” for many of the activities in the town, including car shows, summer concerts and “Christmas on the Green.” For outdoor recreational opportunities, Homer offers several city parks, and Durkee Park is located about one-half mile from the heart of the village via Route 11. Durkee includes fishing, hiking and picnicking opportunities, and a playground with state-of-the-art equipment – all in a beautiful, quiet, peaceful setting. Other attractions in the town of Homer include the Homer Hall of Fame, Cortland Repertory Theater and the Homer Playwright’s Dinner Theater. Historical walking tours are available in the town, and the Homeville Museum contains a huge collection of model trains and railroad memorabilia, as well as war artifacts from the Civil War all the way through Desert Storm.

The Finger Lakes Region has four seasons that are greatly moderated by the eleven lakes of the area. This is because the greater the volume of water, the more time it will take for the air to heat up in the summertime, and in winter, the heat that the lakes have retained all summer is slowly released, moderating temps along the shoreline. Thus, communities along the lakeshores will be warmer in winter and cooler in the summer compared to areas further away from the shore. This phenomenon also accounts for the successful vineyards in the Finger Lakes region. This region receives some of the heaviest snowfalls in the nation. Total precipitation ranges from less than 36 inches to approximately 40 inches of rain and snowmelt.
