Cazenovia is the name of both a town and village, located in Madison County. The village of Cazenovia lies within the town of Cazenovia. The town is on the west border of the county and has a population of approximately 6,500. The village has a population of around 2,600 and lies on the southeast shore of Cazenovia Lake on U.S. Route 20. The town was first established in 1794 and is named after Theophilus Cazenove, an agent of the Holland Land Company. Attractions include the Lorenzo State Historic Site, which is a historic museum on 87 acres that is furnished with period pieces. Critz Farms is also located in Cazenovia and a great family outing in a beautiful country setting with hayrides, a petting zoo, playground, pumpkin picking, corn maze, gift shop, u-pick strawberries and blueberries and more. Cazenovia is also home to a challenging miniature golf course that features a play-through cave, several ponds and streams and elevation changes. Local festivals include Jazz in Caze, usually held in late September, and a Winter Festival, usually held in February. Cazenovia is just a short drive to beautiful Oneida Lake, which offers swimming, boating, fishing, picnicking and camping.

The Finger Lakes Region has four seasons that are greatly moderated by the eleven lakes of the area. This is because the greater the volume of water, the more time it will take for the air to heat up in the summertime, and in winter, the heat that the lakes have retained all summer is slowly released, moderating temps along the shoreline. Thus, communities along the lakeshores will be warmer in winter and cooler in the summer compared to areas further away from the shore. This phenomenon also accounts for the successful vineyards in the Finger Lakes region. This region receives some of the heaviest snowfalls in the nation. Total precipitation ranges from less than 36 inches to approximately 40 inches of rain and snowmelt.
