Constantia is a small town located in Oswega County in north central New York. As of the 2000 census, the population of the town was 5,100 residents. New York State Route 49 runs through the town, parallel to the north shore of Oneida Lake. The southern boundary of Constantia is the south shore of the lake. The northern boundary of town runs through the southern edge of the Tug Hill Plateau. Part of the Erie Canal runs through Constantia, using Oneida Lake as a waterway. Primarily a residential town, Constantia residents commute to work in nearby Syracuse, Oswego, Fulton, Oneida, Utica and Rome. There are plenty of recreational opportunities in Constantia, however. Taft Bay Park is located on Oneida Lake and offers swimming, picnicking and tennis. The nearby village of Cleveland also has a very nice park, and there is a New York State ice fishing access and boat launch site in Bernhards Bay just east of Cleveland. An old railroad bed is maintained as a recreational trail for hiking, bicycling, horseback riding and snowmobiling. This trail connects to many others throughout central New York. In addition, Oswego County has been known for years as one of the best places in the world for salmon and trout fishing.

The Thousand Islands region has a varied climate, depending on location and elevation. Generally, The Thousand Islands has average January temperatures ranging from 14 degrees to 22 degrees Fahrenheit. Summer temps average between 68 and 72 degrees. Precipitation in the region ranges from 36 to 40 inches of rain and snowmelt. There is plenty of sunshine in the summertime and low to moderate humidity levels. Lake-effect snow occurs when cold air crosses the relatively warm lake waters and becomes saturated, creating clouds and precipitation downwind. The location of these snowbands is determined by the direction of the wind. Due to the prevailing winds, areas south of Buffalo receive much more lake-effect snow than locations to the north. New York does not experience devastating storms such as tornadoes or hurricanes, as do other parts of the country.
