Sandy-Creek
is a village of less than 1,000 residents, located near Lake Ontario just off Interstate 81 in the Thousand Islands-Seaway region of the state. Filled with lakes, rivers and streams, the Thousand Islands region is a year-round recreational playground. Sandy Island Beach in Sandy Creek offers swimming, picnicking and other outdoor activities, and other things to do in the area include drift boat trips, fishing, kayaking, hiking, golf, cross-country skiing, sledding and snowmobiling. Sandy Creek is the site of Winona State Forest, which has 50 km of marked trails for skiing and snowshoeing. The park also contains a ski lodge with ski and snowshoe rentals and a cafeteria that serves delicious homemade food. If you aren't into outdoor sports, there's plenty of other things to do in this resort area, such as fall foliage tours, maple sugaring in the spring, shopping for antiques, and visiting the many museums and historical sights of the region. Nearby Sackets Harbor is home to Old McDonald's Children's Village, a working farm and village designed just for kids. Sandy Creek also holds the annual "Great Eastern Whiteout," which features antique and vintage snowmobiles and a snowmobile race.

The Thousand Islands region has a varied climate, depending on location and elevation. Generally, The Thousand Islands has average January temperatures ranging from 14 degrees to 22 degrees Fahrenheit. Summer temps average between 68 and 72 degrees. Precipitation in the region ranges from 36 to 40 inches of rain and snowmelt. There is plenty of sunshine in the summertime and low to moderate humidity levels. Lake-effect snow occurs when cold air crosses the relatively warm lake waters and becomes saturated, creating clouds and precipitation downwind. The location of these snowbands is determined by the direction of the wind. Due to the prevailing winds, areas south of Buffalo receive much more lake-effect snow than locations to the north. New York does not experience devastating storms such as tornadoes or hurricanes, as do other parts of the country.
