Sackets-Harbor
is a small resort town located on eastern Lake Ontario near the 1000 Islands Region of the state. It is between Henderson Harbor and Dexter along Highway 3 near Long Point State Park. Sackets Harbor is known both for its historical significance and recreational opportunities, where city officials say, "the past securely anchors with the present." It is situated on the Black River Bay, which is considered the gateway to Lake Ontario and offers boating and sailing, fishing, white water rafting, parasailing, swimming, water skiing, wind surfing, hiking, biking and more. During the summer months, Sackets Harbor holds outdoor concerts beside the lake, and is the site of a well-known Can-Am Festival. In the wintertime, an annual Ice Fishing Derby and Winter Festival is held in Sackets Harbor. Westcott Beach State Park is located here, and is a popular day-use area with a small marina, fishing, swimming, camping, a playground and picnicking areas. The quaint village of Sackets Harbor has lots of specialty and antique shops, and some of the best restaurants in the northern part of the state. Other attractions located in the village include Old McDonald's Farm Village, the Pickering Beach Museum (built in 1816,) Sackets Harbor Battlefield State Historic Site (the site of two battles of the War of 1812,) and the Seaway Trail Discovery Center.

The Thousand Island region has a varied climate, depending on location and elevation. Generally, The Thousand Islands has average January temperatures ranging from 14 degrees to 22 degrees Fahrenheit. Summer temps average between 68 and 72 degrees. Precipitation in the region ranges from 36 to 40 inches of rain and snowmelt. There is plenty of sunshine in the summertime and low to moderate humidity levels. Lake-effect snow occurs when cold air crosses the relatively warm lake waters and becomes saturated, creating clouds and precipitation downwind. The location of these snowbands is determined by the direction of the wind. Due to the prevailing winds, areas south of Buffalo receive much more lake-effect snow than locations to the north. New York does not experience devastating storms such as tornadoes or hurricanes, as do other parts of the country.
