Tug Hill
is a 2,000 square mile wilderness area, located in Lewis County in Upstate New York, east of Lake Ontario and west of the Adirondack Mountains. The Tug Hill Plateau, as it is known, is beautiful any time of the year, but it’s especially well known for its’ premier wintertime snowmobiling and cross country skiing. The gentle slopes and pristine woods, along with lake effect snows (between 250-400 inches per year,) makes the region a virtual winter wonderland from December through March. Tug Hill, in fact, receives more snow than any other area in northeastern United States. The Tug Hill Forest is one of the three largest intact forests in the state of New York, and is comprised of mostly undeveloped hardwoods, extensive wetlands and the headwaters of 4,000 miles of rivers and streams. Several different species of rare plants and animals are found in the forests. Other outdoor activities in the Tug Hill region, besides winter sports, include fishing, hunting, boating, hiking, biking, picnicking, birdwatching (including eagles,) and fall color tours. There are several towns nearby that offer shopping, restaurants, accommodations and other services for visitors.

The Finger Lakes Region is bounded by Lake Ontario to the north and the state of Pennsylvania to the south. Precipitation in the region ranges from less than 36 inches to approximately 40 inches of rain and snowmelt. The lakes act as a giant %u201Cheat sink%u201D that retain the warm temperatures of summer in their waters, slowly releasing it in the fall and early winter. This helps moderate temperatures along the shoreline. Therefore, communities right along the lakeshores will be warmer in winter and cooler in the summer compared to areas further away from the lakes. This also accounts for the successful vineyards in the Finger Lakes region. As the lake gives out heat in the late fall and early winter, the vineyards have an extended growing season. In addition, the weather in spring heats up more slowly than other areas of the state.
