Oneida-Lake is the largest inland lake completely within the State of New York, located northeast of Syracuse in the Finger Lakes region. It is 22 miles long, and the State Barge Canal links the east end of the lake with the Mohawk River and also follows part of the Oneida River, which flows from the west end of the lake into the Oswego River. There is a beach-resort area nestled on the east shore of Oneida Lake, along the historic Erie Canal. It offers sandy beaches, picnic areas, boating, camping, marinas, fishing and the Sylvan Beach Amusement Park. You'll find a wide variety of restaurants and shops in the Oneida Lake area, and the quiet village of Cleveland sits on the central north shore of the lake. Within the town is a retired railroad bed that is now used for jogging, biking, horseback riding and cross-country skiing and snowmobiling. The rail bed recreational trail covers almost 29 miles of shoreline along Oneida Lake, and connects with other trails in all directions. Oneida Lake is well known for its Walleyed Pike, Perch and Bass fisheries, and as part of the Barge Canal System, it can be reached by boat from Buffalo, Syracuse, Canada and the St. Lawrence Seaway. The nearby Finger Lakes region, with its' wineries, museums and 25 state parks is just a short drive from Oneida Lake.

Central New York has a four season, humid subtropical climate. Weather is heavily influenced by two continental air masses: a warm, humid one from the southwest and a cold, dry one from the northwest. Winters are typically long and cold. Much of the state, particularly western and central New York, are typically affected by lake effect snows that occur when cold air crosses the relatively warm lake waters and becomes saturated, creating clouds and precipitation downwind. This usually results in high yearly snowfall totals in this region. Summers are warm with occasional, brief periods of high humidity. Thunderstorms are possible in spring and summer. New York does not experience devastating storms such as tornadoes or hurricanes, as do other parts of the country.
