Owasco Lake is one of the Finger Lakes, located in the center of the state of New York. The name “Owasco” is derived from the Native American word “Wasco,” which means “outlet” or “floating bridge.” Picturesque Owasco Lake is very peaceful and serene, and known for its excellent fishing for walleye, bass, trout, pike and perch. Other outdoor recreational activities on and around the lake include swimming, boating, water skiing, hiking, biking, picnicking and golf. The nearby village of Auburn offers shopping, restaurants and more, and has a picturesque Historic District Neighborhood with many grand old homes such as the Seward House, which was the home of William H. Seward, Secretary of State for Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Johnson. The city of Ithaca is only 30 minutes away and offers fine dining and shopping, and the larger city of Syracuse is about an hour from Owasco Lake. The Finger Lakes Region is one of the most scenic in the state, and is considered the “Wine Country” of New York State. Attractions include Filmore Glen State Park, Taughannick Falls, Buttermilk Falls, wine tours, the Women’s Rights Museum in Seneca Lake and the Harriet Tubman Home in Auburn.

The Finger Lakes Region has four seasons that are greatly moderated by the eleven lakes of the area. This is because the greater the volume of water, the more time it will take for the air to heat up in the summertime, and in winter, the heat that the lakes have retained all summer is slowly released, moderating temps along the shoreline. Thus, communities along the lakeshores will be warmer in winter and cooler in the summer compared to areas further away from the shore. This phenomenon also accounts for the successful vineyards in the Finger Lakes region. This region receives some of the heaviest snowfalls in the nation. Total precipitation ranges from less than 36 inches to approximately 40 inches of rain and snowmelt.
