Essex is a small town located on the western shore of Lake Champlain in Essex County and is a popular tourist destination. It is also often called New Yorks "most historic hamlet." As of the 2000 census, the population of Essex was 713. Essex was part of a land grant made to Louis Joseph Robart by King Louis XV of Franch, but the land grant was lost after the British took over the region after 1763. The area was first settled around 1765 and the town was formed from a part of the town of Willsboro in 1805. It became an important shipbuilding location. Today, Essex contains one of the most intact collections of pre-Civil War architecture in the nation and has welcomed visitors for centuries to the beautiful shores of Lake Champlain. The towns remarkable collection of Federal, Greek Revival and Victorian buildings are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and it boasts that it is a village that "went to sleep architecturally for 100 years" and has not changed in any important aspects. Essex is a quiet, peaceful place, with over sixty percent of the land in the town classified as agricultural. The countryside is filled with working farms and open fields and a "pastoral landscape. " Lake Champlain offers swimming, fishing, boating, canoeing, picnicking, hiking and biking. Essex is just one hour from Burlington, Vermont and two hours from Albany and a four hour drive from New York City.

Essex Weather & Climate

The Adirondack Mountains, near Saranac Lake and Lake Placid, enjoys four specific seasons with winters that are crisp, cold and snowy and warm, pleasant summers with low humidity. In spring and autumn, the days are warm and the evenings cool, perfect for viewing the wildflowers of April or the colors of fall. The average summer temperature is 75 F (24 C) and the average low is 50F (10 C); winter's average high is 27 F (-3 C) and the average low is 5 F (-15 C). The annual precipitation is 39 inches, keeping the forests green and the lakes and streams flowing. As with most mountain climates, the weather can change quickly, however, so be prepared. A sunny day can turn stormy very quickly in the higher elevations. Luckily, the Adirondacks do not experience the devastation of tornadoes, earthquakes or hurricanes as do some other areas of the country. There is no specific rainy season; rather there are both wet and dry spells in every season.
