Plattsburgh
is called the "Lake City," and is located in the far northeastern corner of the state near Cumberland Bay State Park and the Plattsburgh Air Force Base. It is the county seat for Clinton County. Plattsburgh's nickname "Lake City" comes from its' situation on the western shore of beautiful Lake Champlain, which makes it a center for outdoor recreation and fun - all seasons of the year. Camping, hiking, fishing, canoeing and kayaking, mountain climbing and golf are among the summer activities here, while downhill and cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, ice skating and sledding are popular in the wintertime. Plattsburgh is just an hour from Lake Placid, host city to the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympic Games, and approximately an hour and a hour north of Lake George, another popular Adirondack Mountains recreational lake. Historic Chazy Lake is nearby and offers even more lakeside fun, plus it's home to one of the oldest museums in the state that contains fifteen rooms of period furnishings from the Classical Colonial Period. In addition to sports, Plattsburgh also has plenty of cultural events in the form of music, art galleries, theater, and dance, as well as good shopping and restaurant choices. The city of Burlington, Vermont is just across the border from Plattsburgh, and Montreal, Canada is an hour's drive away with all of its' culture and cosmopolitan atmosphere.
