Germantown is a lovely town located in the Hudson Valley region in the southeastern part of the state. The town has a beautiful rural setting near lakes, state parks and historic sites. Palatine Park is located in Germantown at Lake George South. It’s open for public swimming and also offers boating, picnicking, volleyball, basketball, skateboarding and rollerblading. Camp Palatine, a summer day camp is also located at Palatine Park. Another beautiful spot for picnicking and fishing is Cheviot Landing Park. For history buffs, just a few miles south of Germantown, at State Route 9G, is the Clermont State Historic Site. Here you will find a 500-acre estate that once belonged to the Livingston family. The grounds include the manor house, several outbuildings and gardens that are preserved to their 1930s appearance. Clermont’s architecture, landscape and collections, however, reflect the influence of several generations, from the years 1762 to 1962, when the estate became a New York State Historic Site. The Olana State Historic Site is also just a short drive from Germantown.

Germantown Weather & Climate

The Catskill Mountains  has a climate with many variations depending on the elevation. There is a totally different winter in the mountains and the higher plateaus over 1,000 feet. There, the grip of winter is strong and steady, and above freezing temperatures are less common. Average January temperatures are three to four degrees colder at elevations from one to two thousand feet and over seven degrees colder at elevations above two thousand feet. Snowfall is fairly uniform during the month of January in the Catskills. The third week of July is generally the hottest time of the year in the Catskills, and rainfall during the warm months is usually confined to a few days rather than spread throughout the month. September has warm days, cool nights and fog at dawn over the Hudson valley. By October the hills are a kaleidoscope of color, and the first hard freeze is usually at the end of October.
