Newport is a small town located in Herkimer County, Central New York, in the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains. It has a population of about 2,100 residents, and located within the town is the village of Newport, which has an additional population of approximately 640. This area is a four-season recreational playground with unlimited opportunities for fun. There are more than 40 golf courses in Herkimer County, both 9 and 18 hole courses, with half of them par 70 or better. In addition, there are 15 miniature golf courses in the region. The area surrounding Newport has miles and miles of trails for hiking in the summertime and cross-country skiing in winter. Snowboarding and snowshoeing, as well as downhill skiing at McCauley Mountain, is also part of the wintertime activities in Newport. Lakes and streams abound in the region. The Fulton Chain of Lakes offers twelve miles of continuous lake travel for pleasure boats, and the West Canada Creek is considered to be one of the best trout fishing streams in the state. Other great family attractions in Herkimer County include The Erie Canal, which offers visitors a chance to travel back to the old canal days, and hunting for the famous Herkimer Diamonds. New York’s largest water theme park, the Enchanted Forest/Water Safari, is also just a short drive from Newport.

The Hudson Valley ,which generally refers to the canyon area of the Hudson River and surrounding communities in New York State, has a four-season climate. The first significant snowfall usually occurs in December, but there are variations. Some years there is no snow or ice and the temperatures and river stays quite mild %u2013 high 40s to low 50s. March is the month to look for the first signs of spring. Summers in the Hudson Valley are hazy, warm and humid. September can be a mixed bag of clear, cool Canadian air or humid, warm air with intense downpours. October is one of the best months in the region for hiking and other outdoor sports. The weather is cooler and less humid then, with crisp, clear views of the High Peaks of the Adirondacks, the Catskills and the Hudson Highlands.
