Lake-George
is the name of both a village and a lake, located in Warren County in the scenic Adirondack Mountains region in the northern part of the state. The village of Lake George sits at the southern end of the 32-mile-long lake. The lake is the site of numerous activities and recreational opportunities including swimming, boating, white water rafting, and parasailing, kayaking, fishing, hiking and biking. Million Dollar Beach is a popular beach area for swimming and features a bathhouse, lifeguards, picnic areas and volleyball courts. In the wintertime, Lake George offers ice fishing, ice skating, cross-country skiing and downhill skiing at nearby Gore Mountain. Unique activities include hot air balloon rides over the lake and the Glens Falls area, and narrated sightseeing cruises of the lake on board a steamboat. Several factory outlet centers are located along the "Million-Dollar-Half-A-Mile" in the Lake George Region, and restaurants and lodging are abundant in the area. Other nearby attractions include the Fort William Henry Museum, the Lake George Battlefield Park and the Lake George Opera Festival in nearby Saratoga Springs. A wild west ranch and western town is also located at Lake George, and is described as "an 1800s ranch experience," with horseback riding, wagon and pony rides, a petting zoo, shops, saloon and a Wild West Show.

The weather in the Adirondacks can be variable, but historically the area has not been subjected to the devastation of hurricanes, earthquakes and tornadoes that plague other parts of the country. There are four distinct seasons with winters marked by consistent snowfall and cold, crisp days. Summers are warm and pleasant, with temperatures rarely climbing above 90 degrees, and evenings with low humidity. In fact, in some areas of higher elevation, summer evenings can be downright cool. Generally, there is no rainy season in the Adirondacks, but rather there are both wet and dry spells in every season. Rain in the mountains has uneven patterns. It can be raining in one spot and ten miles away it will be dry as a bone. The western Adirondacks can experience lake effect snowstorms as early as October, from Watertown to Old Forge and areas south.
