Montauk
sits on the farthest tip of a peninsula along the south shore of extreme eastern Long Island. Here, the “cod ledge” off the coast of the island is one of the most renowned fishing spots in the world. It’s generally wind-blown and blustery on Montauk, but that’s part of its charm – a place not that far from one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world, yet it seems very far away. It’s home to the Montauk Point Lighthouse and Museum, which is New York state’s oldest lighthouse dating to 1796. George Washington commissioned the Montauk Point lighthouse and visitors can climb the 137 steps to the top of the tower for a grand view of the ocean and bay. Montauk is the site of several other parks with lots of outdoor recreational opportunities, including Hither Hills State Park, Montauk Downs State Park and Shadmoor State Park. The beaches of Montauk are beautiful, with clean water and gentle surf, so they’re great for children. Fishing charters are available here and there is a championship golf course located at Montauk Downs State Park. Horseback riding, biking, hiking, surfing, camping and picnicking are all available on Montauk. There’s a wide range of accommodations on the peninsula, and the food is great. Altogether, Montauk is a pleasant experience and a great get-a-way from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Long Island enjoys a four-season, moderate climate, given its relatively northern latitude-which makes it a pleasant place to visit year-round. It is the largest island adjoining the continental United States, extending approximately 118 miles east-northeast from the mouth of the Hudson River, adjacent to Manhattan Island. Winters tend to be unpredictable and summers can be warm and muggy, but offshore breezes help moderate temperatures. Spring and fall are the best times to visit, when temperatures are mild. March tends to be rainy, but temperatures stay above freezing. April's warming temperatures makes it more comfortable and May is generally a gorgeous month on Long Island, weather wise. September to November is pleasant and mild, and the changing leaves make it a beautiful time to visit.
