West Point refers to the federal military base (which is a census-designated place) located in the town of Highlands in the Hudson Valley, Orange County, New York. The United States Military Academy West Point is located alongside the Hudson River and the military reservation occupies a large part of the town. As of the 2000 census, the area had a total population of 7,138 people. This is the nation’s oldest service academy (since 1802) and a Visitors Center and the West Point Museum are open to the public on a daily basis. The museum features the oldest and largest diversified public collection of militaria in the Western Hemisphere. Many other attractions are in the area, including historic sites, wineries, antique shops and outlet shopping, museums and fine dining. Recreation in the West Point area includes hiking the Appalachian Trail, which crosses nearby Bear Mountain and Fahnestock Park, biking, horseback riding, fishing, boating, river cruises, ice skating, skiing and more. The Museum of the Hudson Highlands focuses on the rich diversity and beauty of the Hudson Valley and offers nature trails and a gift shop. The Sugar Loafs Craft Village offers over sixty artist studios and craft shops in buildings that date back to the 18th century. Other highlights of the area include the Woodbury Common Premium Outlet stores, the Storm King Art Center, Gillinder Glass Museum, the Harness Racing Museum and Hall of Fame and the Hudson River Maritime Museum.

West Point Weather & Climate

Long Island enjoys a four-season, moderate climate, given its relatively northern latitude-which makes it a pleasant place to visit year-round. It is the largest island adjoining the continental United States, extending approximately 118 miles east-northeast from the mouth of the Hudson River, adjacent to Manhattan Island. Winters tend to be unpredictable and summers can be warm and muggy, but offshore breezes help moderate temperatures. Spring and fall are the best times to visit, when temperatures are mild. March tends to be rainy, but temperatures stay above freezing. April%u2019s warming temperatures makes it more comfortable and May is generally a gorgeous month on Long Island, weather wise. September to November is pleasant and mild, and the changing leaves make it a beautiful time to visit.
