Albany is the capital of New York, located in the eastern part of the state on the high west bank of the Hudson River, approximately 145 miles north of New York City. It also serves as the county seat for Albany County. This very historic area was first visited by Henry Hudson in 1609 and first settled in 1614. Albany was built on the site of the Dutch Fort Orange and its surrounding community of Beyerwyck. The city of Albany was incorporated in 1686, making it the fourth oldest continually inhabited city and the second oldest chartered city in the U.S. The town's nickname, "Cradle of the Union," resulted from the meeting here in 1754 of the Albany Congress, which adopted Benjamin Franklin's Plan of Union, which was the first formal proposal to unite the colonies. Today, the city of Albany remains a center of government and education. It's a good idea to stop at the Visitor's Center, located at 25 Quackenbush Square on Broadway in Albany, for information on the attractions in the area. You can take a walking tour of Albany or a guided tour on board one of the city's trolleys. Some of the things to see include the historic home of American soldier Philip Schuyler (1762,) the Albany Institute of History and Art and the massive State Capitol (1867-1899.) Albany also offers year round special events, concerts, cultural festivals, extraordinary museums and historic sites, restaurants, shopping malls and theater.

Western New York, including The Berkshires, has a moderate four-season climate. The first significant snowfall usually occurs in December, but it varies from year to year. Some years there is no snow or ice until after the first of the new year, and the temperatures near The Hudson River stay quite mild. March is the month to look for the first signs of spring, although cool temps can linger throughout the month. Summers are hazy, warm and humid. September can be mixed with either clear, cool Canadian air or humid, warm air with intense downpours. October is possibly the most beautiful month in the Berkshires with warm, sunny days and cool, crisp nights. Perfect weather for enjoying the foliage. Typically, colors peak the first three weeks of October.

The closest airports in the area are the Albany International airport (ALB) located about 7 miles northwest of Albany, the Schenectady County airport (SCH) located approximately 16 miles northwest of Albany in Schenectady, New York, the Barnes Municipal airport (BAF) located roughly 63 miles southeast of Albany in Westfield, Massachusetts, and finally the Bradley International airport (BDL) located around 73 miles southeast of Albany in Windsor Locks, Connecticut.
