Gore-Mountain is a very scenic region of the state that covers thousands of acres of forested mountains in the Adirondack Mountains. Most popular for its wintertime skiing, Gore Mountain also offers an abundance of other activities, including some that are unique to this part of the country. The Gore Mountain Sports Center offers ski lessons for all age groups and all skill levels under the expertise of some of the best instructors in the east. Experienced skiers will find some of the most challenging trails in the east at Gore Mountain, and cross-country ski trails are also available. Summertime activities on the mountain include white-water rafting, kayaking, canoeing, hiking and mountain biking. Gore Mountain offers scenic gondola skyrides that are an exciting way to see views of the High Peaks and Southern Adirondacks. Other attractions include mine tours of the Barton Garnet Mines, which was established in 1878 and contains one of the world's largest garnet deposits. Visitors can take a tour and learn about the history, geology and present day operations of the mines. Gore Mountain's Northwoods gondola ride also takes you to a tour of a garnet mine. One of the other main attractions at Gore Mountain is a chance to ride on the Upper Hudson River Railroad, which takes visitors on an exciting trip through the breathtaking Adirondacks as it winds along the Hudson River to the train station at Riverside.

Gore Mountain Weather & Climate

The weather in the Adirondacks can be variable, but historically the area has not been subjected to the devastation of hurricanes, earthquakes and tornadoes that plague other parts of the country. There are four distinct seasons with winters marked by consistent snowfall and cold, crisp days. Summers are warm and pleasant, with temperatures rarely climbing above 90 degrees, and evenings with low humidity. In fact, in some areas of higher elevation, summer evenings can be downright cool. Generally, there is no rainy season in the Adirondacks, but rather there are both wet and dry spells in every season. Rain in the mountains has uneven patterns. It can be raining in one spot and ten miles away it will be dry as a bone. The western Adirondacks can experience lake effect snowstorms as early as October, from Watertown to Old Forge and areas south.
