Wells is a tiny village of approximately 600 residents located on the east branch of the Sacandaga River in the Adirondack Mountains of east central New York. It's home to a campgrounds that is open May through September that offers 145 sites, along with swimming and fishing. As part of Hamilton County (which some refer to as "Lake County" due to the large number of mountain lakes in the region,) Wells has much to offer visitors. It's about 35 miles west of Saratoga and Lake George and near Sacandaga Lake, which is a manmade lake created in 1930 that is known as a family-oriented tourist spot. This lake offers sandy beaches, swimming, fishing, boating and other water sports and picnicking. Food vendors and bathroom facilities are also located at the beach. Many fine restaurants, hotels and motels, bed and breakfast inns and vacation rentals surround Sacandaga Lake, and a golf course and miniature golf for the kids is also nearby. To mark the end of summer, each year in September the locals who live along the lakeside engage in a unique tradition. Each one lights a campfire near the waters edge, so that the entire lake is lined with shimmering light. This sparsely populated region of New York makes a peaceful destination for families looking for a rustic vacation get-a-way.

Wells Weather & Climate

The Adirondack Mountains has variable, unpredictable weather, but generally enjoys four seasons with winters marked by crisp, cold days and warm, pleasant summers with low humidity. In spring and fall, the days are warm and the evenings cool, adding to the beauty of the wildflowers of April and May and the brilliant colors of September and October. The average summer temperature is 75 F (24 C) and the average low is 50F (10 C); winter's average high is 27 F (-3 C) and the average low is 5 F (-15 C). The annual precipitation is 39 inches, keeping the forests green and the lakes and streams flowing. Luckily, the Adirondacks do not experience the harshness and devastation of tornadoes, earthquakes or hurricanes as do some other areas of the country. There is no specific rainy season, and lake effect snows can occur as early as late October or early November.
