Canandaigua
is located 25 miles southeast of Rochester on the northern shore of the lake that bears the same name in the Finger Lakes Region of central New York. Its’ beautiful name is Iroquoian and means “chosen spot,” or “settlement place.” Located in Ontario County, which is about 75 miles east of Niagra Falls, Canandaigua is one of the two largest of the Finger Lakes in the county, the other being Seneca Lake. The communities surrounding the Lakes are known collectively as “Lake Country.” Named one of the “10 most perfect places in North America to vacation” by Money Magazine in 2002, the Finger Lakes are world-renowned for their production of award-winning wines and recreational opportunities. The choices are endless - and for all seasons. Choose from swimming, canoeing, sailing, kayaking, white water rafting, fishing or snorkeling. You can go hang gliding or ride in a hot air balloon, or enjoy hiking, rock climbing, biking or golf. Wintertime is just as active, with downhill and cross-country skiing, snowboarding and snowmobiling available at the Bristol Mountain Winter Resort in Canandaigua. Boat tours are also offered in Canandaigua, including sightseeing cruises and dinner on board a 19th century paddlewheel steamer. The town of Canandaigua also features a historical museum that houses a collection of 19th century carriages.

The Finger Lakes Region has four seasons that are greatly moderated by the eleven lakes of the area. This is because the greater the volume of water, the more time it will take for the air to heat up in the summertime, and in winter, the heat that the lakes have retained all summer is slowly released, moderating temps along the shoreline. Thus, communities along the lakeshores will be warmer in winter and cooler in the summer compared to areas further away from the shore. This phenomenon also accounts for the successful vineyards in the Finger Lakes region. This region receives some of the heaviest snowfalls in the nation. Total precipitation ranges from less than 36 inches to approximately 40 inches of rain and snowmelt.
