Honeoye Lake
is located approximately 28 miles south of Rochester in southwestern Ontario County and is tenth in size among the eleven Finger Lakes. The hamlet of Honeoye is situated at the north end of the lake. Honeoye Lake is known for its water-based recreational activities, such as walleye and bass fishing, boating, water-skiing, ice fishing and ice-skating. The Honeoye Lake Public Boat Launch is located at the southeast corner of the lake off East Lake Road, where winter maintenance allows for ice fishing access. There is room for 30 cars with trailers at this launch site. Sandy Bottom Beach is another boat launch access at Honeoye Lake, where launching is available for small trailered boats, cartops and canoes off Sandy Bottom Road at the northwest corner of the lake. There is room for about six cars lakeside at Sandy Bottom with additional parking near the baseball diamond. Ice fishing access is also available from Sandy Bottom Beach. There are several 18-hole golf courses located near Honeoye Lake and the Finger Lakes region is considered the Wine Country of New York, with many wineries offering tours. Other things to do include visiting area antique stores and farmer’s markets. The Finger Lakes Region of New York was ranked 8th in Travel and Leisure Magazine’s “100 Great Escapes for 2002.” The magazine cited the wineries, canoeing and swimming and antiquing in the region as some of the top draws for visitors.

The Finger Lakes Region has four seasons that are greatly moderated by the eleven lakes of the area. This is because the greater the volume of water, the more time it will take for the air to heat up in the summertime, and in winter, the heat that the lakes have retained all summer is slowly released, moderating temps along the shoreline. Thus, communities along the lakeshores will be warmer in winter and cooler in the summer compared to areas further away from the shore. This phenomenon also accounts for the successful vineyards in the Finger Lakes region. This region receives some of the heaviest snowfalls in the nation. Total precipitation ranges from less than 36 inches to approximately 40 inches of rain and snowmelt.
