Conesus Lake
is the westernmost of the Finger Lakes, located in Livingston County, about 25 miles south of Rochester. The lake is eight miles long and flows northwest through an outlet to the Genessee River. There is much to do at Conesus Lake. Vitale Park is located on the northern shore of the lake, and has walking paths, swimming, picnicking and play areas. The park also offers free summer concerts on Sunday evenings. There is a three-year expansion project underway adjacent to Vitale Park (to be completed 2005-2007,) that will feature walking paths, garden areas, and lake viewing benches and an interpretative center. Other activities at Conesus Lake include canoeing, water skiing, fishing and boating and camping. There are many wineries in the area, and other nearby attractions include Mount Morris Dam, the 1941 Historic Aircraft Group Museum and the Genessee County Village, which is one of the largest living history villages in the northeast. Two state parks are nearby – Letchworth and Stony Brook State Park, and there are dozens of special events and festivals that take place year round in the surrounding Finger Lakes region. The city of Rochester is about a thirty-minute drive from Conesus Lake and offers fine dining, shopping and nightlife.

The Finger Lakes Region has four seasons that are greatly moderated by the eleven lakes of the area. This is because the greater the volume of water, the more time it will take for the air to heat up in the summertime, and in winter, the heat that the lakes have retained all summer is slowly released, moderating temps along the shoreline. Thus, communities along the lakeshores will be warmer in winter and cooler in the summer compared to areas further away from the shore. This phenomenon also accounts for the successful vineyards in the Finger Lakes region. This region receives some of the heaviest snowfalls in the nation. Total precipitation ranges from less than 36 inches to approximately 40 inches of rain and snowmelt.
