Rochester
is located along Lake Ontario in western New York, and is the third largest urban area in the state. In 1990 it was named one of ten communities in the country to receive the “All American City Award” as a great place to live. It’s also a great place to visit, with tons of activities, museums, entertainment, art galleries, shopping, restaurants and historic sites. This dynamic city was originally called “The Flour City” due to its large number of mills, but it has also become known as the “Flower City” because of its numerous nurseries, gardens and colorful city parks. Also, Rochester’s close proximity to Lake Ontario and the Finger Lakes Region means it has abundant recreational opportunities such as boating and fishing, swimming, rafting, hiking, golf, camping, cross country skiing and ice fishing. Cobb’s Hill Park in Rochester contains Lake Riley, the old Erie Canal turning basin, and has a fantastic view of the city from the hilltop inside the park. Upper Falls Park on the Genesee River has a 100-foot waterfall, and Manhattan Square Park has a 100-foot observation tower. The attractions in Rochester are endless. Just a few of the more prominent ones include the Susan B. Anthony House, the Center at High Falls Museum and Art Gallery, the Eastman School of Music and Theater, the National Toy Hall of Fame, the Seneca Park Zoo and the list goes on and on. The city also offers several walking tours including the Central City Tour, which crosses the historic part of town, the 100 Acre Tract and a tour of the vibrant East End.

Western New York has a four season climate that is somewhat influenced by the Great Lakes and the eleven Finger Lakes. This is because the greater the volume of water, the more time it will take for the air to heat up in the summertime, and in winter, the heat that the lakes have retained all summer is slowly released, moderating temps along the shoreline. Winters in the area are generally cloudy, cold and snowy, but also include frequent thaws and rain. Over half of the annual snowfall comes from %u201Clake effect%u201D snows and is very localized. Summers are pleasant, with warm temperatures and moderate humidity. Autumn is sunny and very nice, but brief. The first frost can be expected in late September over interior sections, but not until mid October in the areas along the shoreline.
